Butoh, the dance of darkness, is an avante-garde dance form that emerged in Japan in the 1950s. The form resists definition, but is often characterized by meditative movement that is variously informed by sensation, emotion, play, micromovement, surrealist techniques, the grotesque, and – above all – authenticity.

This exploration will include space for conversation after each session and a final show for students to perform.

The instructor

Vangeline is a teacher, dancer, and choreographer specializing in Japanese butoh. She is the artistic director of the Vangeline Theater/New York Butoh Institute (New York), a dance company firmly rooted in the tradition of Japanese butoh while carrying it into the twenty-first century.

Widely regarded as an expert in her field, Vangeline has taught at Cornell University, New York University, Brooklyn College, CUNY, Sarah Lawrence, and Princeton University (Princeton Atelier).
